The first visit the staff relied on her younger bilingual daughter to translate. She was treated with Omeprazole and encouraged to take OTC medication. Today she presents with the same problem. Her daughter states it is the same problem but worse today.

 

Post an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned.

Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why.

Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

The case is of a 26-year-old Spaniard patient who has been to the clinic twice in the last two days, complaining of abdominal pain. On the first visit, her daughter acted as a translator, and the patient was prescribed Omeprazole and encouraged to take OTC medication. Today, the patient has returned with the same problem but worse.

Specific Socioeconomic, Spiritual, Lifestyle, and Other Cultural Factors Associated with The Patient

From physical observation, the patient is likely from a low socioeconomic background, given her inability to communicate in English and having to rely on her daughter for the same. Also, her use of over-the-counter drugs indicates that the patient may not have enough resources to access appropriate healthcare facilities as stated by Alderwick and Gottlieb (2019). Thus, she chose to self-medicate. Spiritual factors include the patient’s values and beliefs that may, in one way or another, influence her choices or attitudes toward her health. Finally, lifestyle factors include the activities that the patient may be engaging in that may contribute to her pain. For example, the patient may not engage in healthy diets or regular exercise.
