In this Discussion, you examine a national healthcare issue and consider how that issue may impact your work setting. You also analyze how your organization has responded to this issue.

Nurse staffing as a national healthcare issue

Nurse staffing is a national healthcare issue because it can affect patient care, patient satisfaction, and the overall quality of life for nursing staff. Nursing is one of the most difficult and stressful professions in the workplace. Nurses are responsible for providing high-quality patient care in hospitals or at home. However, many nurses do not have enough staff to care for their patients adequately. Many hospitals have experienced shortages in their nursing staff over the last few years due to increased demand for nurses (Blouin & Podjasek, 2019). This has caused a rise in patient satisfaction scores, which indicates that the quality of care provided by nurses has improved over time as more nurses were added to hospitals’ rosters. The shortage of nurses has become so severe that some hospitals have had to hire temporary or part-time personnel to provide adequate care to their patients while they wait for permanent hires to be approved by their state’s licensing boards. This type of situation can cause problems for both patients’ recovery times and health outcomes because it takes longer for patients’ symptoms to be treated by nurses who are on call 24/7 instead of having them on duty.
