Discuss barriers to practice as an APN in one’s state from both a state and national perspective. Research methods to influence policy change from various forms of competition, state legislative and executive branches of government and interest groups.

Using the readings from this week as well as reliable outside resources to:
- Identify and describe practice barriers for all four APNs’ roles in your state and discuss these barriers on a state and national level. The four roles include the nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner, and clinical nurse specialist.
- Identify forms of competition on the state and national level that interfere with APNs’ ability to practice independently.
- Identify the specific lawmakers by name at the state level (i.e., key members of the state’s legislative branch and executive branch of government)
- Discuss interest groups that exist at the state and national levels that influence APN policy.
- Discuss methods used to influence change in policy in forms of competition, state legislative and executive branches of government, and interest groups.
- A scholarly resource must be used for EACH discussion question each week.

Many practice barriers impede the capacity to practice independently as an advanced practice nurse (APN) in my state. The APN roles, which include nurse midwife, nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, and clinical nurse specialist, have different restrictions.
The inability of APNs to practice independently in some states is one practice obstacle that prevents APNs from giving patients primary care. For example, in some areas, nurse practitioners must negotiate with doctors to administer prescriptions and carry out other medical operations (Wheeler et al., 2022). The requirement’s restriction on nurse practitioners’ autonomy impacts patient access to care.
Lack of consistency among state licensing and certification standards for APNs is another practical barrier. This inconsistency limits APNs’ capacity to practice in several states, which may make it harder to help those in need of healthcare.
Additionally, APNs’ capacity to practice independently needs to be improved by regional and national forms of competition like doctor associations and insurance firms. According to Wheeler et al. (2022), these organizations frequently lobby state and federal lawmakers to restrict the scope of practice for APNs, which limits their capacity to provide primary care to patients.
