Problem Description

Our group has chosen to focus on the widespread problem of alarm fatigue in nursing practice, especially within intensive care units. Alarm fatigue happens when healthcare practitioners overwhelmed by many alarms become numb, possibly leading to the fact that they cannot respond adequately and immediately during critical situations (Woo & Bacon, 2020). This phenomenon is a significant threat to patients’ safety and healthcare providers. With alarms being crucial in informing nurses of changes to the patient’s conditions, they can become desensitized due to alarm fatigue and do not respond as quickly or sometimes miss responses, leading to potential adverse events.

Significance of the Problem

The potential effects of alarm fatigue on patient outcomes also underline its importance. Woo and Bacon (2020) have shown that alarm fatigue leads to adverse events, including delayed interventions or missing critical situations.
