D224 GLOBAL AND POPULATION HEALTH FIELD EXPERIENCE TIME LOG

Day 1

Date: (04/01/2024)

Time: 8 AM- 3 PM (7 hours)

Activities

At 8 AM, I arrived at Aldephi Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Fatmata Toure, a seasoned nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), warmly welcomed me. She is assigned as my supervisor for the field experience. Our initial meeting focused on the day’s primary objective: enhancing disease prevention among elderly residents by bolstering their immune systems. This is crucial in an LTC setting where the population is particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases.

By 8:30 AM, I had participated in a health education session aimed at the center’s residents. About 20 participants, aged between 65 and 90, attended. The session was designed to address the prevention of chronic diseases such as type-2 diabetes and hypertension, which are prevalent in older adults. We discussed how adopting healthier nutritional habits and regular physical activity could mitigate these risks.

At 9:30 AM, I assisted in a vaccination clinic within the facility. We administered influenza, pneumonia, and COVID-19 vaccines to approximately 30 residents. This clinic emphasized vaccinations’ critical role in preventing infectious diseases, particularly in communal living environments where such conditions can spread rapidly.

Following a coffee break at 10:30 a.m., Ms. Toure and I reviewed the morning’s activities. This reflection period allowed us to evaluate the effectiveness of our disease prevention efforts, specifically the impact of the vaccination clinic and the nutrition education session on the residents’ health.

At 11:12 AM, I facilitated a smoking cessation workshop. This session, attended by ten residents aged between 65 and 85, highlighted the significant health benefits of quitting smoking, especially in reducing the risk of respiratory diseases and improving overall lung health.

Then, at noon, we conducted an outreach program for disease screening within the LTC center. We focused on screening approximately 25 residents for blood pressure and diabetes. Early detection and management of these conditions are vital in preventing further health complications, showcasing the importance of regular health screenings in disease prevention strategies.

Finally, at 1 PM, the day concluded with a planning session. Ms. Toure and I discussed the day’s activities, with a particular emphasis on our lessons related to disease prevention. We also began devising future activities to develop more targeted strategies to enhance disease prevention efforts within the LTC community. Our discussions and planning extended until 3 PM, marking the end of a productive day.

The sphere of care in this experience activity relates to disease prevention.

Rationale

8:30 AM – Health Education Session on Nutrition: The session was intended to provide knowledge on nutrition’s beneficial role in preventing lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and blood pressure problems. The reason why the focus on nutrition is highlighted is based on the acknowledgment of the fact that our eating habits enormously affect the increase of chronic diseases.
